Here are some Frequently Asked Questions regarding Nordic Skiing at MVHS:
What is the vibe of MV Nordic team?
At MV Nordic, we strive to maintain a welcoming environment with a focus on teamwork, progress, and effort. We love to produce excellent skiers, but also hope that our skiers leave this program with a passion for this healthy, lifelong sport. We hope our skiers leave this program having experienced a team-oriented environment, supporting everyone and celebrating all types of success.
What should I expect in training and practice?
We will hold practice every school-day and some optional Saturdays. Practice begins at 3:45pm and will end approximately 5:30pm during dryland, and approximately 6:30pm when we bus offisite. Nordic is an endurance and strength sport. In the early season, our dryland training will consist of some running, weight-lifting, and other ski drills on-site at MVHS. Once there is snow, we will practice at MVHS or we will bus offsite 2-3 times a week to ski offsite at locations such as Como Park, Battle Creek, Elm Creek, Theodore Wirth, etc depending on snow conditions.
I've never skied before, should I be worried about that?
Don't be worried! There are no Try-outs and most of our skiers had never been on skis before joining, this is also true for most other ski programs we compete with. You will come up to speed very quickly with attendance, focus, and perseverance. We will help you learn fast!
What Ski Equipment do I need in order to participate?
Each Skier is required to have 2 pairs of skis and 2 pairs of poles (for classic and skating technique) and one or two pairs of boots ("combi" or skate +classic).
How much will this Equipment Cost?
Equipment cost can vary depending on the level of gear in which you choose to invest. If you're new to Nordic and in need of equipment, you rent gear through the MV Nordic Booster club! We will strive to get everyone outfitted, first-year skiers will get priority over team rental equipment.
Please Note: If equipment cost is a major barrier to your participation, please let us know and we will do our best to help you find affordable gear. Existing team members and coaches might know how to find the right-priced equipment!
What type of clothing do I need to participate?
The team will provide a racing suit and warm-ups for all participants. Each skier will need to provide personal base-layers (long underwear, etc) plus hats/gloves for themselves. For dryland training (pre-snow), you'll need training/running shoes and fitness attire appropriate for cold weather. There are specific ski brands (Swix, Craft, SmartWool, etc) which are going to be available at ski shops, but will be top-cost. We'd recommend checking out off-brand cold-weather performance gear at any sporting store.
If there aren't Try-Outs, how is varsity and lettering determined?
Varsity rosters are fluid and depend on race performance, attendance, and lastly attitude/etiquette. Conduct and contributions to the team will be considered.
Is attendance required, even if I don't expect to race on Varsity?
Yes, as we are an Athletic team (not a club team), therefore attendance is required. If you must miss practice for a parent-approved appointment or conflict, your parent can email a coach in order to have the absence be considered "excused".
Note that missing practice to study or do school work is not considered an excused absence, even if approved by a parent. If this scenario is necessary, we will respect the need to miss practice but it will be considered an absence. Skiers should strive plan and coordinate to balance school work with practice.
