The Alumni Race is here! The image shown here highlights the loop we're going to do twice for our race tomorrow - December 23rd.
Bibs will be picked up by Coach O when the team arrives at Battle Creek and handed out as skiers prepare for their races.
Skiers are excused at 11:35am tomorrow so that they can make it to 1st lunch, which is the only one that is done prior to when the skiers need to change and leave. If a skier wants to finish the class they're in at that time, they should bring their own food and make sure to leave class in time to be on the bus by 12:25pm. Unfortunately, I have to start the update this week with the some disappointing news regarding our planned trip up north for Holiday Camp. Our team was contacted by Giant's Ridge and asked not to come up for our ski trip from Dec 28th-30th. As of right now their ski trails have 1 inch of snow on them and the 3+ feet needed to groom the trails isn't in the forecast over the next 10 days. The coaches, captains / upper classmen, and booster club are working to plan alternative ski experiences and team activities during those 3 days. Over the next few days, look for more information regarding reimbursement for the trip and our replacement plans.
Mesabi Update The surprising and exciting news I received over the weekend is that the Mesabi East Invitational will still be held as scheduled. But how? Giant's Ridge is going to shut down all Alpine operations that weekend and create a Nordic course on the downhill runs :) No, I'm not kidding. Schedule
While we're still waiting for a big snow fall, local parks have made enough snow that they're willing to welcome our whole team onto their trails! Battle Creek is still likely going to be very crowded, so I got as many times slots at Elm Creek as I could. Elm Creek limits the number of skiers on their trails at any given time, so some of our practices at that location will be later in the evening. Please read the schedule carefully, both Wednesday and Friday are evening practices this week.
Now that we'll finally be out on the trails, there are several important things that all skiers need to be responsible for:
Schedule
This week has a much larger focus on skate skiing because of the warm weather. We will put an emphasis on classic skiing when temps drop a little and we don't need to use klister in order to get kick. We're still waiting for that blizzard to hit... In the meantime I'm in contact with Elm Creek and Battle Creek and will update the plan if we're able to get on their man-made snow trails. Considering the mid-40s temps forecasted for Wednesday-Friday of this week, we're planning for another week of dryland training. Except for Saturday when we'll be on snow! (see below for more details) Also, please look out for another email this Sunday evening with some critical highlights for the week.
We have snow! ... sort of. This is an unfortunate part of our season where we don't yet have enough snow to practice on, but there is also too much snow/ice on the roads to roller ski safely. Hope for dry roads, or better yet, much more snow!
Due to the unpredictability of trail and road conditions, the plan for this week may change slightly as the week goes on. I will inform the team of these changes at practice, but please check this website regularly if you want to have the most up to date information. Also please look for an email Sunday evening that will include critical information for everything happening during the carboload on Wednesday 11/29. Week 3 Plan
Thank you to everyone who participated in the lap-a-thon today and to all of the parents who came out to support the team! It was fun to see all of your positive energy and impressive lap totals. The Rally Up Website will stay up for the next week, so don't forget to reach out to friends, family, neighbors, etc. if you haven't done so yet. If you weren't able to make it today, please put in 2 hours of run/walk effort at some point this upcoming week and send me the total distance you traveled. I'll convert it into "laps" and your effort will still be counted on the website.
- Don't forget to visit the team apparel store before it closes tomorrow. - Using the responses to our pre-season survey, I sent an email to all parents last night. Please use the information provided to be added to our Remind Group (the tool I'll use for quick/immediate communication). Reach out to me if you didn't receive that email and would like a specific email address added to Nordic communication. Week 2 Plan With the students having the entire week off for Thanksgiving, we have no official practice. Skiers who finished their cross country season this past Sunday and need some time off, please rest and recover over the break so you're ready to train hard when we get back from the break. If you came into the season refreshed and you're ready for workouts, please incorporate these things into your training plan at some point over the break.
If you left equipment behind in the ski shed, I'm going to open it on Monday morning before captains practice. If you aren't able to make it at that time, consider having a teammate grab your equipment for you. I hope everyone has a fantastic Thanksgiving break! Enjoy some time without homework, get plenty of rest, and think SNOW. Thank you to everyone who made it to the meeting tonight. It was great to see all of you! There was a lot of information shared, so I wanted to create a dedicated post with important links and updates.
